Amy Sherald was born in Columbus, Georgia, but has spent much of her life Baltimore, Maryland. She earned a BA in painting from Clark Atlanta University and an MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Sherald apprenticed with Arturo Lindsay at Spelman College and studied with painter Odd Nerdrum in Larvik, Norway.
