These bugs are often confused with the Box Elder Bug, which has long infested Utah yards and homes. The two bugs look nearly identical and they do appear at roughly the same time of the year. The Elm Seed Bug (left) and the Box Elder Bug (right) look very similar and are often confused.

Elder bugs. The life cycle of boxelder bugs begins in the spring, when adults emerge from their overwintering sites and lay their eggs in crevices of boxelder bark, leaves, or other objects. After about 11 to 14 days, these eggs hatch into wingless, red-abdomen nymphs, which then develop in stages throughout the summer before becoming adults.

Boxelder bugs ( Boisea trivittata) have distinct features that set them apart from the milkweed bugs: Boxelder bug : Adult size: ½” long. Color: Dark gray to black with three red stripes on the thorax, outlined wings in red, and red eyes. Habitat: Commonly found on boxelder trees and occasionally on other related maple species.
