Marlin 39a serial number dates

In 1922 it was again renamed to the model 39 then finally the last change in 1939 to the model 39A, which finally stuck to this day. When first made it had a straight stock in American Walnut. Of course this rifle and all Marlin lever rifles had the highest quality American Walnut stocks. In 1946 the 39A offered a fluted comb rear stock.

Found this cool info to determine age of marlin/glenfield rifles made in 1973 and newer models. Mine was serial number 270---61. According to the link, you take the first two digits and subtract from 100 to get your year of manufacture. In my case, it turned out to be 1973!!!On the barrel, it say Marlin, Model 39A, NORTH HAVEN, CT (not the usual New Haven). The serial number on the tang, under the lever is 2164, no letter prefix or suffix. The stock is checkered and it is a crescent stock. Looks like someone had sanded the stock to refinish it, as the metal butt plate is slightly sticking out on one side.BLACKPOWDERX represents the months. I would also assume that this code will remain constant for the months. The year code begins with "E," when Remington production began, and continues sequentially. Using the barrel info provided by Scorpiusb, a code of "RL" should mean the rifle was made in November 2017. Your Marlin Model 39 M (Mountie) was manufactured in 1980. According to a chart I have on production figures of the Models 39 A, 39 M, 39 C and 39 D ( well, all the 39 series from 1952) there were only 6 39 M's made in 1980. For some reason, production on the Model 39's was quite low for several years (1977 to 1983). I hope this helps.
