I did skull cavern with the Lava Katana like you. Stockpile bombs and duplicate jade from the mines using crystalariums, and I mean in the hundreds for both. When you do go back to skull caverns, buy staircases from the desert trader (1 Jade = 1 staircase, Sundays only) and just skip the first few dozen levels or so and any infested/swarmed levels.
